Older pedestrians hit by motor vehicles in South Australia

Older pedestrians are vulnerable road users. To highlight the safety issues for older and identify countermeasures to improve their safety, this study examined number of hit by motor vehicles in South Australia, characteristics collisions injury outcomes. Police-reported data (2008-2017) 3,493 were analysed, along with hospital (January 2008-November 2010 June 2014-August 2017) 360 seriously injured. Fewer (two age groups: 65-74 ≥75) between 2008 2017 than younger adult (18-64). However, they had higher rates being or fatally injured those aged ≥75 per 100,000 population less likely have consumed alcohol (≥75=5%, 65-74=9%, 18-64=37%) be responsible crash (≥75=36%, 65-74=30%, 18-64=48%).
